On July 21, 2017, Royal Philips and the Singapore Institute of Advanced Medicine Holdings (SAM) announced a collaboration with Varian Medical Systems and IBA Worldwide to establish an advanced medicine oncology center at Biopolis, the Singapore’s international biomedical research hub.
The centre will provide the latest generation of imaging, treatment delivery and clinical informatics technologies to comprehensively address the growing number of people living with cancer in the Southeast Asia region.
An investment of US$ 73 million
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. It was responsible for more than 4 million deaths in Asia in 2016, according to official figures.
SAM is driving the collaboration and will invest up to SG$100 million (US$73 million; €63 million) for the development of this center of excellence in the Southeast Asia region.
An opening planned for 2018
The center is projected to open in stage from 2018 onwards. It will provide oncology solutions for use by healthcare professionals and researchers as well as a platform for professional training to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.
The goal is to house « new innovations and treatment protocols developed via a multi-disciplinary approach for better and more personalized patient care, potentially improved outcomes and a better on-going quality of life for patients, » the press release explained.
Provide earlier detection, safer and more cost-effective treatment
« The new Advanced Medicine Oncology Centre aligns with the founding goal of the Singapore Institute of Advanced Medicine Holdings to provide earlier detection and first-time-right diagnosis of cancer as well as safer, more cost effective treatment by advancing care enabled through research, technology and education, » said Dr. Djeng Shih Kien, founder and chairman, SAM.
Advanced diagnostic imaging systems and clinical informatics
The center team will also have at their disposal a range of advanced diagnostic imaging systems and clinical informatics developed by Philips.
The group will enable the new center to make advances in the field of medical research through its heritage in healthcare innovation and collaboration with medical partner.
« This center will be the first installation of Varian’s ProBeam Compact proton therapy system, which is designed to enable space-constrained sites such as this to offer state-of-the-art technology for cancer patients, » said Dr. Moataz Karmalawy, general manager of Varian Medical Systems’ Particle Therapy division. « [The Advanced Medicine Oncology Center] will open up additional opportunities for both education and research. Singapore is joining an exclusive group of countries that have facilities like these to advance our understanding of not only proton therapy, but also immunotherapy and other cell-based treatments. »
A center dedicated to the fight against aging-related diseases
Apart from cancer, aging-related diseases are a growing concern in the Asia-Pacific region, which is projected to comprise two thirds of the world’s elderly by 2050 (official figures).
In the longer term, the Singapore-based center will also manage a number ofdiagnostic and therapeutic medical specialties through the deployment of world-class imaging solutions to fight against cardiovascular and neurological disorders such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.
