Portea Medical raised series C funding of US$ 26 million (€22 million) at the end of November. Based in India, Portea is a platform offering a range of technology-led healthcare services across four segments: primary care, chronic disease management, elder care and post-operative care.
Since its creation in 2012, the Indian company has gradually become one of the local leaders on the eHealth market.
To strengthen home care services
The company said in a statement that the funds will be used to develop capabilities in order to reach out more customers and strengthen its home care services. The firm also said it will engage close to 6000 people in the next two years and will provide skill up-gradation for its personnel.
The round was led by new investors Saber Partners and MEMG CDC. Accel, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Qualcomm Ventures also participated. Moreover, Avendus Capital provided financial advisory services to the latest funding round in Portea.
US$71.5 million raised between 2013 and 2017
- In 2013, Portea raised approximately US$8 million (€6.8 million) in a funding round led by Qualcomm Ventures.
- In September 2015, the group raised US$37.5 million (€31.7 million) in a Series B round of funding. At that time, the firm stated that it would use the new funds for developing its operations in other Indian cities and expanding its presence in Malaysia but also for hiring and investing in technology.
EHealth: Portea has acquired three start-ups since 2015
Founded in 2012 by Zachary Jones and Karan Aneja, Portea Medical was acquired in July 2013 by Krishna and Meena Ganesh. The company says that it has served 2.5 million customers across sixteen Indian cities so far.
Pharmaceuticals, telemedicine and home care
Since 2015, the Indian company has been gaining momentum in the healthcare market. For instance, Portea acquired three promising Indian companies, which enabled it to strengthen its position in the sector, particularly in the field of eHealth:
- In November 2015, the company acquired Medybiz Pharma (undisclosed amount) in order to establish a specialized pharmaceutical arm to deliver care to patients with chronic conditions.
- In January 2016, Portea acquired a majority stake in eHealth platform PSTakeCare in an all cash transaction. The platform allows users to search for doctors nearby based on the service or specialty, hospital or doctor name and book an appointment.
- In April 2016, the group acquired Health Mantra, a company that offers home care equipment and services for patients suffering from sleep apnea and other respiratory disorder, for an undisclosed amount.
This acquisition enabled the Indian company to strengthen its offerings in sleep medicine, respiratory and geriatric cares and orthopedics.
