Partly because of its infrastructure capabilities, Dubai is a promising smart city which is leveraging digital health knowledge and innovation from around the world to support and develop tailor-made treatments, says Forbes magazine in an analysis published in early May 2017.
Health tech: since 2016, numerous start-ups from all over the world have settled in Dubai
« The digital health startup scene has gained immense momentum in Dubai over the past year, as the city’s vision and drive towards innovation is creating interest in both the public and private sector to explore new technologies, » said Roland Daher, head of the Dubai 100 project, an intensive interdisciplinary pre-accelerator program of six months designed to develop the growth of young talent through industry awareness, entrepreneurship mentorship and business opportunities.
In 2016, many young health tech companies set up based in the smart city.
Dubai 100: Young companies showcase innovative solutions
In April 2017, eHealth start-ups from China, Germany, Nigeria, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States presented their solutions to investors and industry leaders as part of the Dubai 100 program.
Among the innovations presented, there were:
- A virtual reality-based device that helps partially paralyzed patients use their weakened limbs;
- A wearable device capable of diagnosing asthma and monitoring the condition in young children;
- A wearable tool that allows a pregnant woman to monitor her baby’s movements.
Dubai: an ideal smart city for eHealth development
In an effort to transform the way patients look for medical help, digital healthcare entrepreneurs set up based in Dubai, which they leverage as a test bed to validate new concepts and futuristic technologies, said Mr Daher.
Thus they benefit from the advantages of the city, both in terms of the quality of its infrastructures and its regulatory framework, conducive to innovation. » [This interest] is partly due to the multicultural industry here, combined with a culture of embracing new ideas and a will to make ‘the impossible possible’ ».
A cosmopolitan city that facilitates international exchanges
The cosmopolitan aspect of the city is a great asset. In any hospital in Dubai, it is possible to meet clinicians, patients and managers from around the world, said Roland Daher. « So in a single visit, validations and connections can be made with people from the U.S., India, Australia and Dubai. »
Intensive programs to accelerate startup growth
Over the past eighteen months, Dubai 100 and Dubai Future Accelerators (DFA), an intensive twelve-week program designed to identify emergent technologies and businesses, have been facilitated access to these validations and connections, drawing on the collective expertise of healthcare leaders and investors, which contributed to the growing momentum of eHealth industry in the United Arab Emirates, Forbes analyzed.
« I recently sat with the founder of an innovative motion detection company for digital rehab, taking part in the DFA program, » Mr Daher told the US magazine. In less than two months, he had the opportunity to secure a pilot covering hundreds of patients with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). »
The DFA offers entrepreneurs from around the world to submit proposals on cutting-edge products or new technologies. Designers of the selected projects are then flown to Dubai. There, they can access to state-of-the-art prototyping laboratories and benefit from the commitment of government leaders.
